The "biography" is in many respects like a legend of a saint from medieval literature and so one might rightfully have some doubts about parts that one knows from other stories. But that is not really the important aspects of this book.This book works on very many levels and so it is not really easy to read. It should be studied. The two disciples who wrote this account told the "official legend" of Master Wang and this is not better or worse than many other writings of this kind.At the same time this book is very much a teaching tool for those who want to delve deeper into Taoism and who are prepared to return to it year after year to take their further development on the way, what the book has to tell them now. Because every time they will find new meaning in passages that seemed to be trivial or too unreal the first or second time around.Not really a title for "beginners" or people who study Taoism on and of - but for everyone who is really interested in practicing a really important addition to their hand library. The comparison of modern scientific thinking to traditional Taoist teachings and the listing of important Taoist collections of writing alone is worth the price of this book.
A more than interesting biography combined with profound techniques for those who know, where to look. Surely, you make no mistake buying this book, if you feel that life is more than the ordinary.
Ich hatte bereits die deutsche Übersetzung dieses Buches und wollte nun einfach nun auch das Original haben. Jeder, der seinen Horizont weiter spannt als nur über das Alltägliche, wird von diesem Buch fasziniert sein.
I think other western readers will be disappointed at this rather dull tale. If, like me, you are expecting anything like the ripping adventure story "Wandering Taoist" trilogy by Den Ming Dao you will be sorely disappointed. Also, if you are hoping to learn about Taoism, there is very little technical information, and the whole thing reads like a Sunday School story - every exercise he tries works, no one is as virtuous as his teachers, he grows stronger and wiser every day. No real conflict, no human interest. There are many better books in English on Taoist techniques [Mantak Chia, Dr. Yang Jwing Ming, Luk Yu etc.], and the fictional tale (yes I know it is presented as truth) of the Wandering Taoist is much more entertaining. This is the first disappointing book I've read that Cleary is associated with. I can't recommend it for anyone.
I found it very laborious to attempt to read this droning tale. Perhaps I was expecting something like 'The Wandering Taoist' trilogy.....I didn't come anywhere close to finding it. Having studied Daoism for the past decade, I found it utterly lacking in this poorly contrived story. The story itself was boring and had no fiber. There are a lot of boring stories, but few as poorly written as this. If you insist upon trying it, try the library or get a used copy. Don't waste yor money on this one. There should be several used copies available.....cheap. I was not able to get to the end of it, as there are so many good books to read.
